Upcycling Grain

NETZRO Spent Grain Upcycling

It’s time-consuming and challenging for sustainably minded brewers and distillers to provide their spent grain to farmers for animal feed. Many breweries produce far more than the farmers can use and much of it ends up going to waste. NETZRO saw this problem as an opportunity — to rescue and restore this grain..

Today, NETZRO is working with award-winning craft distillery, Tattersall Distilling, known for its sustainable practices. Tons of nutrient-rich, spent rye & corn grains are rescued by NETZRO every week. During the distilling process the sugars are extracted, then using NETZRO proprietary technology, the spent grains are restored leaving behind the nutritious fiber and protein. This marks the first time that upcycled grain from a distillery will be made commercially available as edible ingredients. NETZRO is currently also reclaiming and processing spent grain from various breweries throughout the Twin Cities of Minnesota.

Wholesalers, retailers, restaurants and consumers can purchase upcycled ingredients directly from NETZRO. For each pound sold, Tattersall and NETZRO donate proceeds to The Artisan Grain Collaborative to promote a regenerative food system. Buyers can be assured that NETZRO is socially responsible, sharing profits with farmers in order to promote land stewardship.

NETZRO partnered with Utepils Brewing to run our first pilot project in 2017.  We co-located our prototype processing machine at their Minneapolis facility and partnered with Baker’s Field Flour and Bread to have them mill the upcycled spent grain into a high protein, high fiber flour.

NETZRO is now working with several Minnesota craft breweries including; Modist Brewing Co, Indeed Brewing Company, Dual Citizen Brewing Company, Utepils Brewing, Invictus Brewing Co., HammerHeart Brewing Co., Lift Bridge, and others.

With the upcycled spent grain we are now partnering with local millers, bakers, chefs, food scientists and food production companies, all creating new products and recipes withe these great upcycled ingredients.th
